This novel shook me. The Grapes of Wrath isn’t just a story about the Dust Bowl—it’s a deeply human look at poverty, migration, and resilience in the face of crushing odds. Steinbeck writes with such empathy and clarity that you feel like you’re walking alongside the Joad family, carrying their hope and heartbreak with every mile.

What stays with me most is how timely it still feels—questions about dignity, justice, and survival that we’re still asking today. It’s big, raw, and unflinching—and completely worth your time.

Themes applicable even in out time.

I think this is a book that once one gets used to the accented dialogue, the story starts to flow and the main themes becomes apparent.. The devastation of the Great Depression and impacts on ordinary people's lives who could not do anything about these forces but try to survive as best they could. Several of these themes I felt are applicable in our recent and present times; Banks taking people's property for failure to meet mortgage payments, large commercial businesses paying lower scale wages because they can, people struggling with costs and against forces outside of their control. I was struck by one line in the book when the Mother addresses the company shop clerk after he helps her to get sugar at the high priced company store " If you are in trouble, or hurt, or need - go to poor people. They're the only one's that'll help..."

Wonderful Centennial Edition that looks like jagged edges. My favorite book 55 years ago in high school!
